Managing stormwater runoff helps reduce flood hazards. Developers need to address stormwater during construction activities, and property owners can also take actions to manage stormwater on their land.

Stormwater runoff and managing this runoff is important to maintaining the sustainability of our floodplains. The North Carolina Division of Water Quality has developed best management practices for stormwater management. These best management practices for stormwater runoff include low impact development (LID) practices for stormwater management. The LID approach to stormwater management relies on nonengineered techniques for onsite stormwater management.

The Dare County Soil and Water Conservation Office, which is located at 954 Marshall C. Collins Drive in Manteo, N.C., also has pertinent information on constructing LID projects and best management practices for homeowners.
