The Information Technology Department (IT) helps Dare County Government and its departments serve the public more efficiently through the use of technology.

Where once the IT Department supported a single IBM mainframe computer; today over 500 desktop computers are supported in a Wide-Area-Network connecting Dare County offices from Southern Shores to Hatteras. This network is the backbone for a Voice Over IP phone system that serves the majority of Dare County office locations. IT supports a variety of other technology such as laptops, tablets and smartphones and is responsible for supporting and maintaining technology infrastructure at all Dare County offices.

IT supports application software used by various other departments and ensures the smooth operation of two dozen servers. IT also hosts the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) data for Dare County and handles street numbering in the unincorporated areas of the county.

The IT Department maintains the Dare County website, which has become a popular source of information for Dare County’s residents, property owners and visitors, and includes timely updates during hurricanes and other disasters.

IT staff strive to continually keep abreast of the ever-changing spectrum of modern technology. This is done though formal training classes, independent study and networking with other local, state and private industry IT professionals. Looking for new, innovative and cost-effective ways to serve the people of Dare County is the mission of the IT Department.
