This site is intended to serve as an informal resource to assist the citizens of Dare County along with those who visit our beautiful area. While our mission is to fully serve you, the Register of Deeds office is prohibited by law from giving any legal advice. We strongly encourage you to contact an attorney if you have questions of a legal nature.
The Dare County Register of Deeds office provides a permanent record of real estate ownership and transfers. Our office records deeds, deeds of trust, satisfactions (cancellations), plats, assumed business names, powers of attorney and other miscellaneous documents related to real estate. Our office also records and issues vital records such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, marriage certificates, death certificates, military discharges, and maintains records of notary public commissions.

The Register of Deeds office cannot give an opinion about whether any particular individual or practice meets the statutory requirements. You may want to review North Carolina General Statute 51-1, or consult with an attorney.

How can I get a birth certificate for someone who was adopted?
All birth records for adoptees are kept at North Carolina Vital Records.I paid off my house, when will I receive the new deed?
Some people believe that you receive a new deed when your mortgage is paid off. You actually should have received your deed at the time you closed on your home or property. When you have paid off your mortgage or Deed of Trust, your lender will send us a document called a “Certificate of Satisfaction” to be recorded. Typically lenders request that we send the "Certificate of Satisfaction" back to them after recording. If you would like a copy of your deed or satisfaction, please use our online deed search option or contact our office for assistance at 252.475.5970.How can I add, remove, or change name on a deed?
To change a name on a deed , a new deed must be prepared, preferably by a licensed attorney as we cannot guarantee the legality of a document. All documents must meet the North Carolina Recording Standards and Requirements for Filing ( found under "RECORDING SERVICES" on our home page).
Can I view a map online?
Yes, we have scanned all of our maps beginning in September 1953.
- Click on (Online Deed & Map/ Plat Search)
- Change tab at top right to "View Images"
- Change book type to "Map".
- If the map/plat book has a number you will enter "mb" and the number for the book (example - mb2). For page, enter the slide number.
- If the map/plat book has a letter, you will enter pc and the letter for the book (example - pcb). For the page enter the slide number.
- Then click search.
Can the Register of Deeds office locate a property by address?
Does your office accept electronic recordings?
Yes. The companies we currently use are Simplifile for all documents CSC and ePN for document's except Deeds.

North Carolina General Statue 66-71.4 states that
“(a) Before any person engages in business in this State under an assumed business name, the person must file an assumed business name certificate in the office of the register of deeds of the county in which the person is or will be engaged in business. If the person is or will be engaged in business in multiple counties, filing is required in only one of those counties.
(b) A person who engages in business in this State under more than one assumed business name must file an assumed business name certificate for each assumed business name. The person may, however, include no more than five assumed business names in one assumed business name certificate if that same person is or will be engaging in business under each of the assumed business names listed in the certificate…”
North Carolina General Statue 66-71.5 states that “An assumed business name certificate must include:
(1) The assumed business name.
(2) A real name of the person engaging in business under the assumed business name. If the business is a partnership other than a limited liability partnership or limited partnership, the assumed business name certificate must include a real name of five general partners or of each general partner, whichever is fewer.
(3) The nature of the business.
(4) The street address of the principal place of business.
(5) Each county where the person uses or will be using the assumed business name to engage in business.”
The N.C. Secretary of State oversees the qualifications of notaries in North Carolina. You may obtain the information from the Notary Public Section of the N.C. Secretary of State’s website www.sosnc.gov.
Once you receive confirmation from the N.C. Secretary of State , you must appear at the Register of Deeds to take your notary oath. Fee for the notary oath is $10.00.

Dare County imposes a surcharge of 2% on credit card transactions. This fee is to offset the acceptance cost of credit card.

Per GS 132-1.10. (g):
Any person preparing or filing a document for recordation or filing in the official records may not include a social security, employer taxpayer identification, drivers license, state identification, passport, checking account, savings account, credit card, or debit card number, or personal identification (PIN) code or passwords in the document, unless expressly required by law or court order, adopted by the State Registrar on records of vital events, or redacted so that no more than the last four digits of the identification number is included.
Any person has a right to request a register of deeds to remove, from an image or copy of an official record placed on a register of deeds’ Internet Web site available to the general public or on an Internet Web site available to the general public used by a register of deeds to display public records, any social security, employer taxpayer identification, drivers license, state identification, passport, checking account, savings account, credit card, or debit card number, or personal identification (PIN) code or passwords contained in an official record. The request must be made in writing and delivered by mail, facsimile, or electronic transmission, or delivered in person, to the register of deeds. The request must specify the personal information to be redacted, information that identifies the document that contains the personal information and unique information that identifies the location within the document that contains the social security, employer taxpayer identification, drivers license, state identification, passport, checking account, savings account, credit card, or debit card number, or personal identification (PIN) code or passwords to be redacted. No fee will be charged for the redaction pursuant to such a request. Any person who requests a redaction without proper authority to do so shall be guilty of an infraction, punishable by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500.00) for each violation.
