Located in the heart of Kill Devil Hills, Station 1 is responsible for providing service to one of the busiest and most populated areas of the Outer Banks—and due to this high demand and need for a rapid response to emergency calls, the replacement of this particular facility is a top priority for Dare County.
July 3, 2024 Update:
Dare County, in partnership with the Town of Kill Devil Hills, will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the recent completion of the new 36,000-square-foot building that will serve as Dare County EMS Station 1 and Kill Devil Hills Fire Department Station 14 beginning at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 5, 2024.
Following the ribbon cutting ceremony, an open house will be held until 7 p.m., providing members of the community with the opportunity to take self-guided tours of the new facility, which is located at 1628 N. Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills (Dare County EMS Station 1) and 1630 N. Croatan Highway in Kill Devil Hills (Kill Devil Hills Fire Department Station 14).
In addition to self-guided tours, the open house will also feature ambulance and fire apparatus displays, "Stop the Bleed" training, "Hands Only" CPR training, free blood pressure checks, and various handouts and children's activities provided by Dare County EMS and Kill Devil Hills Fire Department staff members. Light refreshments will also be served.
June 18, 2024 Update:
Dare County EMS Station 1 in Kill Devil Hills is 89 percent complete. All of the parking areas located in the front and back of the building have been poured and shaped, landscaping has been installed, and the temporary emergency traffic control light has been installed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Inside the building, all of the epoxy flooring has been poured and all tile work is complete. Appliances are scheduled to be installed within the next two weeks. Room signs and numbers will be installed next week, and furniture will be installed the first week of July. A ribbon cutting ceremony and open house are tentatively scheduled for Monday, August 5, 2024.
May 31, 2024 Update: Dare County EMS Station 1—the third and final station included in Phase 1 of Dare County’s multiphase EMS improvements project—is nearing completion. All of the vinyl tile flooring has been installed, and all of the electrical and plumbing work is now complete. Epoxy flooring will be poured during the first week of June in the bays and locker rooms.
The parking lots located in both the front and back of the station have been formed and poured, and the service road will soon be resurfaced. In addition, the pump station at the facility will be started up the first week of June to ensure that it is functioning correctly. During the first two weeks of June, landscaping will be planted around the property, and all signage for the station will be installed by the middle of June.
Construction is on schedule to be completed in the summer of 2024, and more information regarding a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house to celebrate the completion of the project will be announced as it becomes available.
February 2024 Update: EMS Station 1 in Kill Devil Hills is about 60% complete. Many citizens may have already noticed one of the most exciting developments to the exterior of this building- the installation of the blue roll-up bay doors. The installation of these doors began in February. All windows were installed at the start of 2024 and the “storefront” doors will soon arrive and be fitted. The installation of the metal roof panels is also in progress. The final coat of exterior paint will be the finishing touch to the building’s exterior appearance, and this is projected to take place before the end of February, closely followed by the grading and pouring of concrete and asphalt for the parking areas and driveways.
Within the north side of the building, which will house Kill Devil Hill Fire Station 14, the ceiling grid is nearly complete and electrical crews are currently dropping and wiring lights. On the south side, which will house Dare County EMS Station 1, rough-ins are in progress for the mechanical and plumbing components, to be closely followed by the installation of the ceiling grid in March.
Throughout the building’s interior, drywall installations were completed and the first coat of paint was applied. The first coat of “accent paint” has also been applied- blue accent walls for the rooms within the Dare County EMS side of the building and red accent walls for the rooms within the Kill Devil Hills Fire side of the building. The final coat of interior paint will be applied close to the project’s end. Bathroom tile installations will soon begin throughout the building.
Construction of the new EMS station is on schedule to be completed in the summer of 2024. Once completed, the new EMS Station 1 in Kill Devil Hills will be the largest EMS facility in the county and enable Dare County EMS to provide residents and visitors with an even higher level of response to the influx of emergency calls that are received by the department on a daily basis.
In December 2021, the county finalized the purchase of property in Kill Devil Hills directly to the south of the Kill Devil Hills Fire Department where an entirely new 36,000-square-foot station will be constructed. Demolition of the existing structure located on the site of the new EMS station—formerly Mako Mike’s Beach Grille—began on March 27, 2023.
Dare County, in conjunction with the Town of Kill Devil Hills, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony at 2 p.m. on May 10, 2023, for the new facility that will serve as Dare County EMS Station 1 as well as Kill Devil Hills Fire Department Station 14.
