Following any type of disaster we must be prepared to rapidly respond and meet the needs of the community. Public health readiness is particularly important in disaster response because of the vulnerability of the affected population to changes in their environment and the need to quickly share information on the health status of the community with a range of partners.

Our Preparedness program aims to ensure that the public’s health is protected in the case of intentional or unintentional disasters such as pandemics, terrorism and weather related disaster situations, i.e. hurricanes.

Northeast North Carolina Medical Reserve Corps (NENCMRC)

We are proud to be part of a collaborative partnership between many agencies in Northeastern North Carolina, including other local public health departments, the Greater Albemarle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Greater Pamlico Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, area hospitals, county emergency management, and other regional, state, and national preparedness agencies.  For more information visit the NENCMRC webpage. 

Special Medical Needs Registry

Dare County has a significant population with “special needs”, normally defined as “...individuals who would need assistance with medical care or personal care during evacuations and sheltering because of physical or mental impairments”. Special consideration must be given to this population’s needs during an emergency.
