About

Smart Kids R Safe Kids was developed to raise awareness about water and hurricane safety to our children. In the Outer Banks, water safety is a constant concern, and we know it is important for our children to be smart and safe!

Our team focused on two areas, safety at the beach and during floods or hurricanes which could result in evacuation. Our goal is to target younger children, 1st and 2nd graders, so they can spread the knowledge of water safety as they grow and work in the area.

The program is funded by the  NC Eastern Preparedness Region Bright Ideas Grant award given to the Preparedness Section of the Dare County Department of Health and Human Services, Education & Outreach Division.  We are also grateful for the support of the Manteo Children’s Librarian, Cape Hatteras Elementary School,  First Flight Elementary School,  Kitty Hawk Elementary School, Manteo Elementary School, Nags Head Elementary School, Wanchese Christian Academy, and Dare County Emergency Management.
