Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center

This free event is open to the public and geared specifically toward older adults and their family members, as well as caregivers for the elderly. “How to Spot a Scam” will feature a series of presentations designed to empower attendees with knowledge on protecting themselves and their families from various scams. Topics covered will include cybercrime, mail fraud, identity theft, Medicare fraud, and banking and investment scams.

Scheduled guest speakers include Stephanie Bias with the N.C. Department of Insurance’s Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP); Captain Kevin Duprey and Lieutenant Doug Oberbeck, both with the Dare County Sheriff’s Office; as well as representatives from Southern Bank, the Albemarle Commission Area Agency on Aging and more. Local providers will have vendor tables set up to share their information about the services they provide.

The Baum Senior Center is also planning a Shred-a-Thon event to be held the same day. This event will provide a safe and secure opportunity for community members to dispose of documents containing sensitive information that could be used by scammers.
