Residential-Single Family Dwelling

  1. Application and Site Evaluation: The lot owner will need to fill out an application. (A fee is required). This will authorize an environmental health specialist to visit the property and evaluate it. The property will need to be properly marked. After the site evaluation, a letter will be sent to the owner from the environmental health specialist to inform the owner whether the lot will support a septic tank system in its present condition. Recommendations for necessary site improvements will be made.

  2. Improvement Permit: A survey of the property showing all planned improvements drawn to scale must be submitted to the Dare County Health Department for an improvement permit. (A fee is required).

  3. Construction Permit: Proof of an approved water source (i.e., an approved well or a copy of your receipt from the water department ) and the improvement permit with two sets of house plans must be submitted. (No fee is required.)

  4. Operations Permit: An environmental health specialist will do a final site inspection. The following items must be completed:
    • An approved and properly installed septic tank
    • A sealed sewer line from house to tank
    • A constructed driveway
    • An approved and functional water supply
    • The house as built conforms to submitted house plans
