Am I registered?

Check the status of your voter registration using the NC State Board of Elections Voter Search.

Register to Vote:

You may register to vote in Dare County if you are:

A citizen of the United States; and
Be at least 18 years of age or will be by the date of the general election; or are at least 16 years old and understand that you must be at least 18 years old on the day of the general election to vote; and
Have been a resident of North Carolina, this county, and precinct for 30 days before the date of the election in which you intend to vote;
Will not vote in any other county or state after submission of a registration form; and
Not have been convicted of a felony, or if so, have completed any sentence requirements (including any probation, post-release supervision, or parole).

Voter Registration Deadline:

October 11, 2024, for the general election on November 5, 2024 @ 5 PM.

If you miss the registration deadline, you may be eligible to register and vote or make changes to your voter registration (anything other than party affiliation) and vote during the early voting period.

CURRENT STATUS - PHOTO ID REQUIRED

All registered voters will be allowed to vote with or without a photo ID card. When voting in person, you will be asked to present a valid photo identification card. If you do not have a valid photo ID card, you may obtain one from your county board of elections prior to the election, through the end of the early voting period. If you do not have a valid photo ID card on election day, you may still vote and have your vote counted by signing an affidavit of reasonable impediment as to why you have not presented a valid photo ID. Note: An inactive voter is still a registered voter. A voter with the status of inactive will be asked to confirm their physical and mailing addresses when they appear to vote. No special documentation is required.

New registration of voters is not permitted between first and second primaries. This means same-day registration is not available during early voting for the second primary elections.

How to Submit Your Voter Registration Form

Complete and return the North Carolina Voter Registration Application (English) or North Carolina Solicitud de Inscripcion Para Votar (Spanish) to the Dare County Board of Elections Office. You may drop-off the form during normal business hours, place in the drop box outside of the Dare County Administrative Office, or mail your completed form to the mailing address below.

Online Voter Registration (through DMV)

Complete an application for new voter registration or to update your address or party affiliation online through the NC DMV website.

Existing N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) customers can update their voter registration through its online voter registration application. They can use the online application to update:

Party affiliation

Customers may not use the online voter registration service to change their name.

Party Affiliation

When you register, you will need to declare your party affiliation. You may register with any recognized party in the State of North Carolina which is Republican, Democrat, Unaffiliated, Libertarian or Green. Party affiliation determines the Primary in which you are eligible to vote. If you chose not register with a political party, you will be registered as unaffiliated.

An Unaffiliated voter is currently allowed to vote in the Democratic or Republican Primary. The individual party has the authority to permit Unaffiliated voters to vote in its primary. When presenting to vote, the Unaffiliated voter must state the political party with which he/she affiliates and in whose primary he/she wishes to vote.

Early Voting & Same-Day Voter Registration

Individuals may register and vote in person at any early voting site in their county during the early voting period. Upon completion of registration, the newly-registered voter can immediately vote at that same site. This process is known as "same-day registration." New registration of voters is not permitted between the first and second primaries. This means same-day registration is not available during early voting for a second primary.

Same-day registrants must attest to their eligibility and provide proof of residence. A voter attests to their eligibility by completing and signing a North Carolina Voter Registration Application. The voter must prove their residence by presenting any one of the following documents with their current name and current address:

North Carolina driver license.
Other photo identification issued by a government agency. Any government-issued photo ID is acceptable, provided that the card bears the voter's current name and address.
A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing the voter’s name and address.
A current college/university photo identification card paired with proof of campus habitation.

*Fraudulently or falsely completing a North Carolina Voter Registration Application is a Class I Felony under Chapter 163 of The NC General Statutes.

Within two business days of the person’s registration, the county board of elections will verify the registrant’s driver license or social security number, update the voter registration database, search for possible duplicate registrations, and begin to verify the registrant’s address by mail. The registrant’s vote will be counted unless the county board of elections determines that he or she is not qualified to vote in accordance with North Carolina law.

Update my Voter Registration:

Change Address, Name or Party Affiliation

You must update your registration if you:

have moved to another address within Dare County since you registered to vote; or
have changed your name; or
wish to change your party affiliation

To change your address, name or party affiliation print, complete and return the NC Voter Registration Application to the Dare County Board of Elections Office. You may drop-off the form during normal business hours or mail your completed form to the mailing address below.

Party Affiliation

Cancellation of Registration

How to Cancel your Voter Registration

There are several ways to cancel your voter registration.

When you register to vote in a new county or state, you can complete the "Previous Voter Registration" section of the registration form. That county or state will notify Dare County that you have moved, and we will then cancel your Dare County registration.
Complete the back of your voter card with the new address and county information, mail the voter card to:

3. Complete a Cancellation of Voter Form - Cancellation of Voter Registration Form (This form can only be completed and signed by the voter).

Notification of a Deceased Voter

To notify the County Board of Elections of the death of a registered voter, you may print and complete the Notification of Deceased Voter Form and mail it to:

Upon receipt of the form, the deceased voter will be removed from the county's list of registered voters. Only a near relative or personal representative of the deceased voter's estate may complete and sign the form.
