The Dare County Public Works Department's Sanitation Division provides residential and commercial solid waste collectionfor all areas of unincorporated Dare County, as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk. Solid waste is collected and transported to the Manns Harbor Transfer Station and then transported to Bertie County for final disposition.

This department also provides residents of the unincorporated areas of Dare County with a large item pickup, which is held once a year. This service helps residents dispose of furniture and white goods not picked up during regular sanitation service.

Please note that Dare County Public Works only provides services to the unincorporated areas of Dare County and the Town of Kitty Hawk. If your property is located within the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head or Manteo, please contact your local town officials for information regarding residential and commercial solid waste collection services.

Bear-Resistant Trash Cans:

A limited supply of bear-resistant trash cans are available for the same purchase price as regular cans. A locking mechanism allows containers to be easily opened by humans using one hand but prevents bears from opening with claws, paws and teeth.
