A burn permit is required before starting any fire in unincorporated areas of Dare County.

Permits must be requested in advance by submitting an online request through the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources. Make sure you choose Dare from the dropdown box and click Go! to submit.

The issuance of a burn permit does NOT relieve the permittee of responsibility for complying with all air pollution laws, regulations and ordinances, or damage caused to others. The only material allowed to be burned is yard waste produced on the property. For more detailed information visit North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Air Quality or call your local fire department or contact the Dare County Fire Marshal office. Good judgment and extreme caution should always be used.

Towns within the County have their own restrictions and requirements. See "County Fire Districts & Municipalities" for contact numbers.
